Staff Changes
The last week of July brought change to Physical Solutions as the staff and many patients said farewell and good luck to Phil Rolfe. He moves to Colorado with his wife as she pursues a master’s degree (their son Landon joins them as well!). Phil heard many thanks from patients who have received benefits of his PT expertise, as well as his sense of humor, kindness, and compassion. He will certainly be missed by patients and his co-workers.

Welcome Matt Olesen
Now join us in welcoming Matt Olesen, PT, DPT, MS. Matt is a graduate of Duke University’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. Matt has over ten years of experience in the fitness and wellness industry. He served as Director of Health and Fitness Programs at Yale University, managing health and fitness programs for students, athletes, faculty, and staff, as well as working with injured athletes to design post-rehab programs.
Matt was an Academic All-American for the University of Connecticut Track and Field team. His events included long jump, triple jump, and javelin. A severe ankle injury ended his track career prematurely. Matt draws from his long experience of rehabilitating this injury to help educate patients on injury prevention and to develop sport-specific rehabilitation programs that help patients return to high levels of performance.
Matt's professional interests include sport-specific rehab (especially golf, track, baseball, basketball, football, and tennis), orthopedics, manual therapy, injury prevention, fitness and wellness programs, and low-level laser therapy. Read more about Matt on our website >>

New Treatment at Physical Solutions!
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT or cold laser)
Lasers are being used for many things these days, and physical therapy is no exception. Low-level laser can help treat many conditions. After much research, we chose the Microlight ML830® laser to use at Physical Solutions. The Microlight is a “cold” laser that delivers light to deep tissues. Most other lasers are the same category as laser pointers.
A team of doctors and medical engineers designed the MicroLight as a safe and effective therapeutic application of advanced low-energy laser technology. The outer skin layers absorb some light, but the MicroLight gets more light past the outer layers of the skin in to the damaged cells that will benefit from light. This light energy promotes the process of “photobiostimulation.”
Balancing the Body's Network
Damaged cells show an imbalance in the nerve network, lymphatic system, circulatory system, or possibly all three. Low-level laser focuses on the interdependent relationship between the nerve network, lymphatic and circulatory systems. Although it is possible for damaged cells to normalize on their own, laser treatment may speed up the process.
A good example is acute soft-tissue trauma. An injury of this type consists of damage to several elements involving the deep, sensitive layers beneath the skin, including muscular, neural, lymphatic, and vascular tissue. The body naturally swells when hurt this way. This swelling prevents excessive movement of the damaged tissue. The trauma triggers two types of pain. The first type is actual trauma pain from the injured tissue, while secondary pain comes from the swelling itself.
Reducing Swelling and Pain Helps Many Conditions
Therapy with low-level lasers first targets the lymphatic system, because it maintains the fluid balance in the body. The infrared laser light also improves reabsorption of the fluid that causes the swelling. As the swelling is reduced, the pain goes away and normal movement returns.
Studies show laser therapy helps with pain, myofascial and trigger point pain, carpal tunnel, epicondylitis, shoulder bursitis, tendinopathy, and cervical osteoarthritis. Many other related conditions have responded favorably to this treatment as well.
Our new Physical Therapist, Matt Olesen, says, "Cold laser is a remarkable tool that effectively reduces pain and enhances the body's ability to repair itself."
