Getting new running shoes?
When you get new running shoes, use these tips to get the best shoes for your needs:
- Shop where the serious runners or triathletes shop. The fitting experts there will help you get shoes that support and fit you. Proper shoes are especially important if you have any problems with your feet or lower-extremities.
- If you want to spend the most money, by all means go for the latest models. But if you can get very good shoes plus good savings by getting a slightly older model. Think of them as vintage shoes.
- While it's fine to wear the older models, don't wear old shoes. If you run regularly, replace your running shoes every six months. High-mileage runner should get new shoes very two or three months.

Test Predicts Injuries for Professional Football Players
"Weak" is not the first word that comes to mind when looking at a professional football player. But while these superb athletes can be big and strong in most ways, subtle weaknesses can cut playing time for some of them dramatically. A new study shows that a brief but very important set of tests known as the Functional Movement Screen can identify which players are more likely to be seriously injured so they can take steps to reduce the risk.
About the Functional Movement Screen
During the Functional Movement Screen, an athlete performs seven basic movements to test his or her strength, mobility, stability, and balance. The exam requires the necessary functional patterns and combinations of movement necessary to be safe and successful in sports. Years of observation and research have allowed development of this screen to quickly ascertain potential risk when an individual's movement patterns are painful, limited, or altered.
These seven basic movements are the foundation for the more complex athletic movements done in football and other sports. The movements are the deep squat, the hurdle step, the in-line lunge, the straight-leg raise, the push-up, and tests of shoulder mobility and rotary stability. The athlete scores from 0 to 3 on each test, with a perfect score being 21 for all seven tests.
Lower test scores meant higher injury rates
Researchers at University of Evansville, Indiana, tested the active members of an NFL Football team before the season started, then tracked the injuries during the season.
Forty-six players of the team participated. (The authors of the study agreed to not identify the team.) A player was considered injured if he was listed on the injured reserve and lost at least three weeks of playing time. This definition made sure that only serious injuries were counted. Amazingly, no previous study showed the rate of injury for pro football players, so the study used an expected injury rate of 15% based on previous high-school and college studies. The medical professionals who work with pro football players said that 15% was on the low end of what they would expect for a season.
At the end of the season, the researchers found that 51% of the players who scored 14 or less on the FMS test were seriously injured, while fewer than 10% of those who scored over 14 were injured.
Predictive tests help active people from eight through adulthood
Here at Physical Solutions, we're excited about the Functional Movement Screen because it can help us pinpoint meaningful weaknesses before an injury occurs. Our use of this screening tool for several years has guided us to develop more successful exercise programs for our personal-training clients. We can teach the right athletes and clients the right moves to help them get stronger and move more safely. The bottom line for you is that the same exercises and movements that prevent injury also improve athletic performance. Research can efficiently guide us to identify these factors quickly and implement the corrections surely.

And the tests are not just for pros. Any active person from eight and through adulthood can benefit. FMS gives us a very time- and cost-effective tool to focus on what needs to be changed. Physical Solutions offers FMS testing as well as another predictive test: the video drop-jump test developed by the Cincinnati Sportsmedicine Research and Education Foundation. Between these two tests, we're not going to miss much. We can optimize the time a group of athletes can spend on their sport by reducing unnecessary training and avoiding preventable injuries.
Take a little time to getting tested may save lots of playing time later
You can take both the Functional Movement Screen and the video drop-jump test in about fifteen minutes at Physical Solutions. Sign up for a set of classes and get both tests as a bonus, a $90 value. Either way, the test results will be a great investment in your training program.
